Fund NSW Preschools Now directed its concerns about the viability of community-based preschools to Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Early Childhood Education Leslie Williams.
Albury Preschool director Gabrielle Connell said the change.org petition urged the NSW government to commit to ongoing consultation with preschool providers and families.
“We want to ensure that a fair, equitable and sustainable funding model is devised and implemented as soon as possible before preschool becomes a luxury not a right for all children,” she said.
NSW has the highest preschool fees of any state or territory and the lowest participation rates of four-year-olds in the year before they start school.
The preschool funding model was discussed at a meeting in Sydney of Community Childcare Cooperative NSW, preschool stakeholders and Ms Williams.
The cooperative asked the NSW government to increase its contribution to early childhood education and spend all budget allocations.
