Brett Myers from CFA District 24 said a triple zero caller reported three explosions about 4pm and a column of smoke rising out of the gorge.
He said Beechworth Fire Brigade crews called for police to attend the fire.
The fire burning in grass and scrub was controlled after about 30 minutes.
“It is a bit concerning this time of year that the grass is dry enough to burn,” Mr Myers said.
