The 32-year-old had been taking part in the Myrtleford Alpine Rally on Saturday when he crashed at Carboor about 2.30pm.
The man lost control of his motorbike on Mt Emu Track and was badly injured, and was taken to hospital by other riders.
Police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs are a factor.
The injuries may involve head and neck damage but are non-life threatening.
