The move comes following legislation passed in Queensland which requires less proof of the cause of cancer for long-serving staff to receive redress.
Obtaining certain evidence is described as “almost impossible” by Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria chief executive Andrew Ford.
He said the cause could be a fire or chemical spill more than 10 years earlier which the member may not even remember.
Country Fire Association District 24 president Max Wood said firies wanted a commitment from the government.
“We've been fighting for this for so long and we just want the same as the other states,” he said.
“It’s an ongoing thing and if there is something there, we need protection.”
