But as an advocate of bitless riding, the idiom does not fit but he’s eager to share his experience and knowledge nonetheless.
Mr Wison and Kelly Bick will run a free bitless horse riding demonstration and information day at their Tallangatta Valley property “Waterfall Creek” on Sunday, November 1.
“I have seen head tossing stop the minute the bit is replaced with a bitless bridle,” Mr Wilson said.
“The rider is quite amazed that the change can be so instant and clear.
“Often they then feel guilty because of some of the barnies they have had with their horse, banging on the bit to try to get the horse to behave.
“Sadly I too have done that, but not now I am a bitless rider.”
The Tallangatta Valley information day is open to anyone and people are encouraged to bring their horse to try a range of bitless headgear under the eye of experts.
Several of the world's most popular bitless bridles and a selection of halters for horses will be on show and trained horses will be there to show bitless bridles in use.
Mr Wilson is a qualified and experienced barehoof practitioner who trims professionally and runs barehoof care workshops.
Ms Bick is also a skilled hoof trimmer and helps people transition to bitless riding and develop better relationships with their horses.
Several horses familiar with bitless bridles will be in action to help demonstrate the differences compared with traditional bit control.
“When someone comes to learn about going bitless, the changes can be pretty amazing in both horse and rider,” Mr Wilson said.
“The horses get it straight away, and when the rider’s confidence becomes solid, they too seem to have a much better experience.”
Advocates of bitless riding believed using bits to control a horse was crude and not kind on the animal.
Waterfall Creek, which has been advocating bitless riding for several years, also acts as a horse retirement and lodging venue.
The couple also operate a guest house at their organic farm.
The bitless information day will run between 10am and 4pm at Waterfall Creek.
