Defending a mere 170 at Xavier Oval, Patties were cruising at 5-126 but crumbled late to finish their 50 overs two runs short but with two wickets still in hand.
“They needed 50 or so off the last 10 and were well on top,” Panthers captain Sam Harris said.
“We got a couple of wickets and slowed them up.”
Lavington lost regular wickets during its innings and had it not been for debutants Lachlan Taylor-Nugent (54) and Jethro Menzies (29) would have struggled to reach 150.
Star Patties all-rounder Jon Shaw took the key wickets of Sam O’Connor, Aaron Jory and Harris.
He then top-scored with 45, but Patties fell just short in the run chase.
“We were lucky we were playing with no fielding restrictions,” Harris said.
“We were able to put everyone out on the fence to save some boundaries.
“You have to use the rules to your advantage.”
