State director Jenny Hammet said on Tuesday the only official nomination to date was from Wangaratta's Marty Corboy.
But she confirmed two other candidates were planning to join the race ahead of the Thursday deadline.
The pre-selection battle has been overshadowd by the sudden death of former Indi candidate, Don Chambers, on an overseas visit to Italy at the weekend.
Mr Corboy paid tribute to Mr Chambers' contribution to the National Party.
"Don was a local champion who personified what it was to be a Nationals member," he said.
"Don was a regular feature at National Party state conferences."
The pre-selection convention will be held on November 14.
