Fire season got off to an uneventful start in Wodonga on Monday, but firefighters have warned anyone burning off without a permit will be charged.

Wodonga Fire Brigade station officer David Brown said restrictions came into effect at 1am, banning open-air fires into summer.
"We'd obviously take a no-tolerance approach to burning off," he said.
Dry, windy weather this week would make a fire difficult to control.
Firefighters did not receive any emergency callouts on the first day.
