NLNL is a drug and alcohol-free event where people of all ages are invited dance in the dark without fear of judgement.
Albury branch ambassador Bridie Guy said she first discovered the event through a friend.
“At first I guess there’s sort of that little bit of uncertainty and curiosity but once you get past that, you just let go and really enjoy it,” she said.
“It’s the music and it’s you and you can dance how you want to without worrying about how you look.”
Ms Guy and Geraldine Denis-Hickey started the group in January 2015 and meet on the last Wednesday of every month.
“Our group is growing, I think it’s the kind of thing that will really appeal to a lot of people,” she said.
Ms Guy and Mrs Denis-Hickey compile a playlist each month and use candles to dimly light the room.
“It’s dark enough that you don’t bump into people but also so that your inhibitions are removed,” Ms Guy said.
“You can see silhouettes but you can just dance in a safe environment without being self conscious and dance the way you feel.”
NLNL started in Melbourne in 2009 by dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett and has since spread across the world with groups in Europe, North America, Asia as well as across regional Australia.
NLNL takes place tonight at 6pm at the Albury Wodonga Theatre Company, 234 Olive Street, $5 entry fee.
