The Sydney Thunder star will play a one-off Twenty20 game against Wagga Sloggers on Sunday week at Billson Park, and hasn’t ruled out returning if the side progresses in the knockout competition.
McDonald, who played for New City before embarking on a professional career, said he was excited to be playing on home soil for the first time in over 15 years.
“At this stage just the one game, but there is the off chance that something may eventuate but we’ve got to get through this round first,” McDonald, 34, said.
“It was just a conversation with Gerard Midson that escalated.
“I’ve got a bit of time off and it’s the Sydney Thunder area so it’s a good fit.”
The former Victorian Bushrangers star has a busy schedule.
McDonald is currently playing Victorian Premier Cricket with Geelong before starting the Big Bash season with the Sydney Thunder in December.
He’ll then head over to the UK in February to coach Leicestershire.
McDonald will be the Bullets’ second marquee player, along with Canberra-based Cade Brown.
Border cricket identity Gerard Midson and Bullets all-rounder Matt Armstrong played key roles in pulling off the huge coup.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Armstrong said.
“He’s got an apparel business (Iridium Sports) and we asked if he’d play and he said, ‘I’ll think about it’ and came back and said he would.
“He will definitely bat in the top four and probably bowl four overs.”
The Border Bullets won their opening game against the Southern Riverina Vipers, with Brown top-scoring with 35 off just 25 deliveries.
The Wagga Sloggers won their opening game against the Murrumbidgee Rangers, but with McDonald on the Border side, they’ll be underdogs for next week’s clash.
Armstrong said having McDonald and Brown on board would boost the team’s chances of making the final at the SCG.
