The 35-year-old woman, who works at Xavier College in Melbourne, broke her femur while mountain bike riding at Mt Beauty on Thursday.
She had been taking about 20 year 10 students down the East Kiewa fire trail when she lost control.
Her left leg became wedged in the frame of the bike and her femur snapped.
Police and paramedics spent more than three hours rescuing the woman.
Leading Senior Constable Peter Johns said the woman had been taken to Albury Hospital.
“All of the students were kept away from the scene,” he said.
“It was very painful for her regarding the treatment in order to get her transported.
“The students eventually rode back to Mt Beauty and had a small debrief amongst themselves and were offered counselling.”
The teacher’s leg was badly damaged by the crash, which occurred about 3.10pm.
Steep and windy terrain delayed access to the site.
“It was just an unfortunate accident,” Leading Senior Constable Johns said.
