Exton will return to the Tigers after kicking 27 goals in Benalla’s historic Goulburn Valley premiership this year.
The 25-year-old said the appointment came out of the blue.
“It’s not something I had thought about until after the grand final,” Exton said.
“It just came up in a conversation.
“I haven’t coached before and it’s something I’m looking forward to.
“I have stayed in touch with a lot of the boys since playing for the club in 2014 and hopefully we will shape up alright.”
Exton played his 50th match for home club Benalla this season and has had stints with Barnawartha and North Cairns.
He hopes to land several recruits in coming weeks.
“I think we can keep our list together and add a couple,” he said.
Exton takes over from Mark Sarau who guided the Tigers to a flag in 2013.
