Someone entered St Michael's Catholic Church on October 29 or 30.
They searched through several cupboards in the Towong Street building and may have drunk wine used for communion.
Police believe nothing was taken during the incident, but say a roller door was damaged.
There was also minor damage to other items inside the church.
The priest had been away at the time and the damage was discovered the day after the break-in.
Tallangatta police are investigating and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
