The Rutherglen Field and Game Club was targeted on Sunday night.
A Ford utility was driven into the property off Jones Road and locks were forced off sheds containing petrol and clay targets.
A petrol container was taken and placed into the back of the vehicle, which appeared to have run out of fuel or become bogged.
The theft, which police believe occurred about 9pm, was abandoned and the thief left without the vehicle and targeted items.

Club member Ron Eggleston said there were no guns kept inside the premises.
“Owners bring their own guns and there are no firearms or ammunition left at the place at all,” he said.
“All they would get would be traps and a few clay pigeons.”
Police dusted for fingerprints and removed several pieces of evidence from the property.
“We're very appreciative of the work the police have done,” Mr Eggleston said.
