The Meadows Agistment owner from Greta South had her hopes, and her money, on the underdog horse owned by her Melbourne-based nephew Darren Lonsdale.
The horse had been written off by many in dry conditions, given odds of $101-1, and the most the family was hoping for was a surprise placing.
Mrs Meadows had still encouraged her friends to back her nephew.
While most punters at Wangaratta were disappointed they had not backed the outsider, Mrs Meadows’ let out a big scream of “it won!”.
“It’s a real surprise,” she she told The Border Mail through a few proud tears.
“It’s such a thrill for an everyday person to have a horse in the Melbourne Cup and then to win it.”
The Meadows’ are hoping Mr Lonsdale will bring Prince of Penzance to stay at the Greta South property.
“We’re working on it,” Mrs Meadows said.
