Alcohol affected drivers on highways and freeways were targeted by the highway patrol unit from Friday until Tuesday as part of Operation Furlong.
Over the five days, police detected 12 drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs and handed out 143 other offences.
Wodonga highway patrol Sergeant Cameron Roberts said, given the increased police presence, drivers largely got the message.
“It's not a huge number considering it was a long weekend and the races were on,” he said.
“You could broadly describe the behaviour as quite good, but there is always that small handful that wont pay attention and don’t get it.
“I think sometimes with the weather people do actually drive cautiously and with the storms we had, some people probably didn’t want to drive at all.
“Generally they were all pretty good and pretty well behaved, it would be highly unusual not to get some misbehaving at any period.”
The biggest incidents at the weekend included a driver whose car was impounded after they were caught travelling at 149km/h on the Hume Freeway on Friday.
Police also attended a rollover at Berringama at 12.10pm Tuesday.
A man, 20, from Corryong had been travelling east on the Murray Valley Highway when he lost control on a left-hand bend.
He was airlifted to Albury Hospital but was found to have minor injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
