Beechworth Theatre Company’s production of The One Day of the Year begins on Friday evening at the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall, with further shows on Saturday and next weekend.
An exhibition of Anzac memorabilia at the hall will be officially opened by Indi MP Cathy McGowan on Saturday at 10.30am.
The winning essay competition entries on the future and importance of Anzac Day will also be recognised.
Organised by the theatre company, Beechworth RSL and the Burke Museum, the exhibition will run until Sunday, November 22.
The events form part of the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program funding obtained by Beechworth Theatre Company.
The One Day of the Year, written by Alan Seymour and first published in 1958, caused controversy through the criticism of Anzac Day expressed by its younger characters.
Beechworth Theatre Company secretary John Eldrid, the show’s director/producer, said he considered the play an appropriate choice.
"It's an iconic Australian play for a start,” he said.
“It is about Anzac Day but even today people might be shocked by the way the teenagers pursue it.
“It's such a good play … I was involved in it many, many years ago, back in the early '80s.”
