The Lakers, who lost just one home-and-away match last year, didn’t get near the Magpies’ target of 214 to go down by 59 runs at the Norm Minns Oval on Saturday.
Stand-in Magpies skipper Dylan Landgren, who took 1-15, said bowling pressure took its toll on Yarrawonga-Mulwala.
“We bowled really well as a team,” Landgren said.
“To get a big scalp like Yarrawonga is something we haven’t done for a few years so it’s good for our confidence.
“A lot of times we’ve bowled exceptionally well and won, or batted well and won, but this time we did all facets pretty well which was good.”
Lakers star Matt Knight had 100, 58 and 94 in his previous three innings, but chopped on a delivery from young Magpies all-rounder Jarryd Wallace when he was on 20.
Lakers captain Pat Martin top-scored with 33, while Brad Melville (3-43) was the pick of the Magpies’ bowlers.
Elsewhere, Ovens Valley United and City Colts were forced to settle for a draw after the pitch at Whorouly was deemed unplayable.
It’s believed school children may have interfered with the pitch in the build-up to the second day’s play.
Rovers United Bruck kept its unbeaten record in tact, thrashing Beechworth by 93 runs at the W.J. Findlay Oval.
Mark Drage took 3-9 for the victors.
And in other results, Benalla Violet Town defeated Greta and Delatite defeated Benalla Bushrangers.
