The 28-year-old was punched on the boardwalk between Cafe the Pre Vue and the Precinct Bar early Sunday morning.
His nose was broken about 12.15am and he was knocked unconscious, and needed tongue surgery.
Leading Senior Constable Joanne Miller said police were trying to track down the man responsible.
He is bald and wore a white shirt with black pants.
