The three men and a woman, who were in a white Holden VT Commodore thought to be stolen, drove into the IGA about 1.45pm.
A man jumped out of the car and ran off as a woman tried to fill the car with petrol.
Owner Gary Evans refused to authorise the sale and the car sped off onto Union Road, narrowly missing a police car.
The fuel hose had still been attached to the car and was severed, spraying petrol.
It’s believed there had been a machete inside the car, which was later dumped.
Staff member Brian Jenkins said people had been shocked as the incident unfolded.
