Sarau, who has more than 20 years of experience in the VFL, Victorian Amateurs and Tallangatta leagues, will step into the newly-created role immediately.
“Although I announced my retirement from hands-on coaching last season, I always wanted to keep a foot in the door in some capacity and I see this as a wonderful opportunity,” he said.
“Jason (Hollard) gave me a call and asked about a role and I said I’d love to get involved in something like this at Lavington.”
Sarau will work with senior Lavington coach James Saker and his assistants as well as Panther reserve and third grade mentors Mitch Palmer and Shane Jeffs.
Sarau, who did the running for St Kilda's Grant Thomas in 2004 and 2005, took over as coach of Rutherglen in 2008 and guided Barnawartha to a flag from the elimination final in 2013.
Panther assistant-coach Jason Hollard said Sarau’s experience would be invaluable.
