Impressions of Paris features the lithographs of three 19th century masters Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who painted posters advertising the Moulin Rogue, Honore-Victorin Daumier a satirist and Edgar Degas.
National Gallery of Australia international prints and drawings assistant curator Julia Greenstreet said de Toulouse-Lautrec’s memorable image Moulin Rogue La Goulue was his first major work and established his reputation.
“The dancer in the centre was a star in the Parisian demi-monde (underbelly),” she said. “She was really well known for this new dance … like the can-can but more explicit.”
MAMA’s new temperature control capabilities has enabled the delicate pieces to go on display.
The exhibition is open until January 31 and two guided tours in French will run on December 19 and January 16.
