The Blues travel to S. Hargreaves Oval on Saturday to take on the Lakers in a one-dayer, with the temperature predicted to top 42.
Despite the heat, all WDCA games will go ahead.
The association’s policy states that “if the temperature for Wangaratta is forecast to be over 40 the extreme weather committee shall be responsible for making a decision regarding cancellation of play”.
Wind and humidity is also taken into account.
“From our point of view it doesn’t particularly bother us,” Gathercole said.
“We are happy to go with whatever they deem appropriate.
“I’m a bit surprised they don’t have a definitive (heat policy) number, but that’s not something we have any control over.”
The Lakers will be below full strength, with star all-rounder Matt Knight out with a shoulder injury.
Greta, which is coming off the bye, is missing veteran Andrew Squires and youngster Liam Barber, who has eight wickets this season.
Gathercole, who will bat first if he wins the toss, knows the Lakers will be considerably weaker without Knight.
“Any time a player of his quality isn’t in the side makes it a little bit easier,” he said.
“We will have to perform really well, but it’s certainly handy when that happens.
“They’ve still got plenty of strong players in their side.
“It’s always a good wicket, a good ground.
“And with the heat, if you get some runs on the board you never know.”
