Police said the incident happened at the Grand Central Hotel on Sunday at 1.40am.
A man has been arrested though police are still seeking witnesses.
Acting Sergeant Mark Weller said it was certainly a nasty incident.
That was especially given the publicity in recent times about the potentially fatal consequences of such actions.
“It was a one-punch hit and as the result of that, a person has gone down unconscious,” he said.
“As a result of that, a 25-year-old local man was arrested, then interviewed and charged with relevant assault matters.”
Sergeant Weller said the victim, a Wangaratta man in his 30s, was taken to Wangaratta hospital for observation and was now “doing OK”.
“We’re looking for anyone with information about what happened.”
The charged man has been bailed to appear in Wangaratta court at a later date.
