He was agitated with worry as the sirens wailed and the smoke clouded over his Indigo Valley farm.
He owned two houses on his 304 acre Cheesleys Road property, but feared one may have been lost to the flames.
The extend of the damage would not be known until it was safe enough for him to go and look.
Mr Cheesley said there wasn't much more he could have done.
“I own all the hills up the back, they're all burnt,” he said.
“I've just got to wait and see what happens.
“The helicopter is stirring up the livestock a bit.
“The neighbour also has quite a few sheep in the paddock – it's hard going to get them out of there.”
The fire came within 50 metres of his primary household as water came in from the sky.
It tore through more than 7000 hectares of Victorian farmland.
