The couple, who was from “anywhere and everywhere”, used six solar panels to power a caravan.
They have been on the road for eight years and set up for the next month by Lake Hume at Huon Reserve.
“We’re totally self-sufficient, we don’t even start a generator,” Mr Winter said.
“When you’re free camping, you have to be in the know and on the go.”
The set-up means they can be comfortable at night even on total fire ban days and pump water from the lake for their showers and flushing toilet.
It was enough for the Winters to enjoy a quiet Christmas by the tree – their first without extended family – with a roast chook.
