The decision to install lights that will make the tower visible from across the city is part of the $2 million High Street revitalisation project.
Wodonga Mayor, Cr Rod Wangman said illuminating the tower and beginning a program of mood lighting in High Street was an important part of reclaiming the street for nocturnal activity and encouraging restaurants to remain open longer.
“Community feedback has indicated the water tower is Wodonga’s major icon and as a historic city feature, it will be much more recognisable by being highlighted every night,” he said.
Cr Wangman said six companies submitted proposals to light the tower.
The contract went to Rexel Lighting, whose regional lighting manager Simon Gullifer is a former Wodonga resident.
“We are using the latest highly efficient, low maintenance LED technology that uses a fraction of the energy of traditional lighting,” Mr Gullifer said.
“We will also be lighting the three camphor laurel trees next to the tower with 1500 green LED bud fairy lights.
“The total effect will certainly bring the place to life and be an investment that is both respectful to the water tower’s historic value and as a tourist promotion.”
Cr Wangman said the results would provide 32 colour change lights on the tower which were programmable according to city activities.
Business owners are being encouraged to have their stores lit up for the launch of Lounging on High on November 16.
They will be asked to participate in a joint switch-on at 7.30pm.
Prizes will go to the best small (five or less staff) and best large (more than five staff) businesses.
The winners receive $2000 each to spend on business advertising.
