Seven Australian animals were subjects of plans released on Friday by the environment department.
Four of them are now priority mammals and birds in the government’s threatened species strategy which was unveiled last year.
Possum researcher Dean Heinze said the pygmy plan had been in the works for so long some of it was outdated.
The plan outlines about $8 million in spending over five years to conserve the animal with $140,000 spent last year by the commonwealth on a cat detecting dog in Mount Kosciuszko.
The possums reside on tall peaks in the Victorian and NSW alps.
