After a successful trial the cafe will operate on the first Saturday of each month at the Sustainable Activity Centre, the former Tourist Information Centre.
Repair cafe coordinator Lizette Salmon said the trial held over four sessions in Wodonga had been a resounding success.
“Visitors came from as far afield as England and New Zealand, with tourists from these countries taking a peek at the Wodonga session in the hope of starting up a similar enterprise in their home towns,” she said.
Ms Salmon said they had an average of 12 volunteer repairers at each session, making the Border repair cafe the largest in Australia.
“Other Australian repair cafes have around five repairers per session, so we’re doing exceptionally well,” she said.
With the groundswell of interest, the repair cafe working group is seeking more volunteer repairers.
Ms Salmon urged skilled repairers – especially in battery-operated appliances, woodwork, household items and bikes – to get in touch.
“Even if you can only help out once every two or so months, that would be greatly appreciated and ensure the future of the repair cafe.”
