The husband and wife operators of the Wodonga Chef-hatted restaurant Steve Carne and Jodie Jones will serve a sold-out, five-course degustation lunch to 70 people, which will mark the end of a whirlwind three years.
The couple were the first to set up on Wodonga’s former railway land in Junction Place in June 2013.
Carne said they achieved what they set out to do even though the time seemed fleeting.
“We came here with the idea to provide something that Wodonga or even Albury didn’t have, operating from this beautiful, historic building,” Carne said.
“Now with others arriving it’s very much the place to be; in the bigger picture it’s really worked.”
Broadgauge, which was awarded a Chef hat in September 2015, attracted a keen following of foodies who appreciated Jones’ exacting standards and Carne’s amiable front of house service.
Jones said the restaurant catered equally to the adventurous diner and the broader market.
“Dessert is my favourite thing to create,” Jones said.
“A favourite was a gorgeous berry dessert … but the popular lamington ice cream dessert travelled with us from our Source Dining days.”
The couple operated Albury restaurant Source Dining from August 2005 to June 2011, gaining Restaurant and Catering's restaurant of the year and one Chef's hat, before they ran The Kitchen at the Courthouse Hotel at Howlong.
They will open a food store and restaurant-style takeaway business, Ebden & Olive, in early July.
“There was a gap in the market for time-poor young executives who don’t want to eat traditional takeaway but who don’t want to go out either,” Carne said.
“The food store – next to Nord Bakery – will fill that niche.
“We’ll have 10 seats for dining inside but essentially it’s about takeaway.”
Having worked in the hospitality trade for almost three decades, Jones said they were looking forward to a change of pace.
“We’ve worked night service solidly for 11 years,” she said.
“It’s time to slow down as best we know how.”
International chef David Kapay has signed a nine-year lease to operate the restaurant, rebranded as Miss Amelie, from June 30.
