The Australian Country Party’s Indi candidate has announced a policy to immediately close all off-shore detention centres, saying they are dangerous and not properly scrutinised.
He said the the closures would save $1.3 billion per year to be spent on the troops and $500 million for UN refugee safe havens.
“I expect this policy will be supported by the UN and adopted by other countries around the world,” Dr Fidge said.
The candidate also supported building new detoxification facilities in rural areas, co-located with hospitals.
“Many addicts do not seek help because they will not leave their family and social supports far behind while they travel to the major cities,” he said.
