Rigoni, 33, was named as one of the Demons 150 greatest heroes from 150 years in front of a capacity crowd of 1300 at Crown casino on Saturday.
The former Ovens and Murray representative said it was an unexpected honour.
“I was very honoured and privileged to be honest — to be in that group with some of the guys that are in there,” he said.
“It was a bit unexpected. I didn’t think I’d played enough games (especially) with some of the guys from the ’50s, who won so many premierships.
“We got our notification by mail and I thought I’d just been invited along to go to the function and not actually nominated, so I was pretty shocked when I had to read the letter a couple of times.”
Rigoni was drafted from the Saints for the 1998 season and played every game for the Demons in his debut year as he became a leading midfielder.
He was the Demons’ top ball-winner in the 2000 grand final loss to Essendon before back injuries cut him down.
Rigoni was delisted at the end of the 2001 season but was redrafted by the Demons for the 2003 season before finally terminating his career in 2005.
He finished his AFL career with 107 matches and 35 goals to his name.
