The award recognises a person who has contributed to the food scene on the Border in honour of passionate foodie Kim Caunt, who lost her battle with cancer about 18 months ago.
Ms Bruce said Ms Caunt had nurtured her breadmaking hobby in her role at The Essential Ingredient in Albury.
“Kim sold me quite a few cookbooks,” Ms Bruce said.
“She sold me the first book that really unravelled the mysteries of sourdough, Tartine. That was the book that really enlightened me as a self-sufficient baker.”
Ms Bruce founded The Bicycle Baker in early 2015, two years after her husband, Tim Alexander, bought her a 1936 Malvern Star butcher’s bicycle, now known as Crusty.
“It’s amazing to be recognised by the community (through Kim’s Table) - it’s a wonderful acknowledgement,” she said.
“The ethos behind the business is to provide Albury-Wodonga with wonderful sourdough bread, which has been accepted and appreciated.”
More than 60 people gathered at the Mitta Mitta Canoe Club on Thursday night to reflect on Ms Caunt’s contribution to the Border food scene.
Long-time friend Claire Douglas said Ms Caunt brought knowledge and enjoyment to TAFE students on Border field trips.
“Any aspect of food she knew lots about and brought so much joy to it,” Mrs Douglas said.
Fellow book club member Virginia Sykes said Ms Caunt had hundreds of cookbooks.
“She read cookbooks like people read novels,” she said.
“She wanted to know the story behind the recipe … she was always researching.
“She was always generous spirited with her knowledge.
“No one ever missed book club at her place; it was more about the supper than the books.
“Kim’s the missing ingredient in our lives today but hopefully her exquisite taste buds live on in the recipient of this award for years to come.”
Eating Travel owner Noelle Quinn said the annual award would recognise someone Ms Caunt would have supported in their passion.
“We know Kim would be very happy with the first award,” she said.
