"Alice, and her family, have been long time friends,” Ms Ley said.
“She asked if I could help out today and I was happy to do so.
“Party politics has traditionally played very little part in framing Albury City elections or the decisions of council, which I think is a good thing.
“Labor and the Greens chose to form political tickets for this poll and I guess the results will determine whether that was the right decision."

Labor candidate Darren Cameron has claimed election rival Alice Glachan has been caught-handed with her ties to the Liberal Party during voting for the Albury Council election on Saturday.
Farrer MP and federal cabinet minister Sussan Ley was spotted handing out how-to-vote cards for Cr Glachan in Lavington.
“This is conclusive proof of what I said in the campaign,” Cr Cameron said.
“The Liberal Party faithful were out in droves to support the allegedly independent ticket of Alice Glachan.
“There needs to be legislative reform to prevent not just members, but fellow travellers like David Thurley and Graham Docksey from claiming to be independent.”
Ms Ley and Cr Glachan have been contacted for comment.
Cr Cameron this week called on the NSW Government to tighten regulations around local government elections to prevent rivals running as independents when they have known links to a political party.
Cr Glachan has contested the Albury election as an independent.
