Fine art photography exhibition On The Edge will offer works from Border photographers Paul Temple, Rachel Pringle, Helen Bishop and Eric Saros at GIGS Art Gallery from October 5.
The four artists, who work independently to produce thought-provoking photographic images, last showed their works together on the Dark Energy exhibition at GIGS Art Gallery during July 2014.
Wodonga photographer Paul Temple said there was no particular theme for the upcoming exhibition but all of the artists had tried to produce work that did not conform to norms.
“It is not straight photography; it binds two or more things together,” Temple said.
“The borders between the real and the unreal are blurred, hidden, not succinct.
“The photographs urge us to consider their story.”
Temple said some of his images existed in their true form taken with the camera while others had been tampered with or embellished further.
He said there would be composite works, where two images had been put together.
“Others are black and white and a little on the dark side, not necessarily in theme,” he said.
“People can look at them on their face value or delve a little deeper.”
Temple said he used film, digital, infra-red and an alternative process, the cyanotype, to create his work, as well as different cameras including film, digital SLRs and a mobile phone.
“I believe that all types of hardware and media are legitimate tools for the production of an image that hopefully entertains, creates some thought process within the viewer, or tells a story created by the viewer's own imagination,” he said.
Having moved to the Border from Melbourne in 1985, Temple, a former industrial chemist, focused on his art career after completing a Bachelor of Arts (photography) at Charles Sturt University – Albury in 2004.
He has had a solo exhibition on the Border most years since then as well as exhibiting with one or more other artists.
On The Edge runs until October 30, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am until 4pm, at GIGS Art Gallery on Gateway Island.
An official opening will be held on October 8 from 11am to 1pm.
