In a tight tussle, Civic won three of the four rinks to send a message to the rest of the competition that they will be no easybeats.
Thomas Webb and Brian Hogg played a 23-all draw.
Daniel Webb edged out Tom Goodwin 23-22, Scott Widdison surprised Matt Robertson 21-16 and Max Scanlan accounted for Tony Williams 30-21.
The loss came as a big surprise after Benalla won last year’s grand final and had picked up several recruits including Robertson.
Wodonga proved too strong for Wangaratta, winning 100-88 at Wodonga.
Skip Paul Davies and his side proved the difference between the teams with their 39-18 win over Greg McDonald.
Peter McLarty edged out Trevor Sellwood 25-23.
Wangaratta stayed in touch on the back of Maurie Braden’s 28-20 win over Ashley Bates and Ian Brimblecombe’s 19-16 success over Steve Coulston.
Rutherglen made a successful return to A1 ranks by defeating Myrtleford 112-83.
Despite playing away from home, the side adapted quickly to the greens to score the biggest win of the round.
Yarrawonga upstaged YMGCR 106-85.
In next weekend’s round, Benalla will look to open its account against Yarrawonga, Corowa Civic host Wangaratta, Myrtleford meet Wodonga and Rutherglen take on YMGCR.
