The merged council has ended the routine of Corowa Shire which staged events in Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala on the day.
Federation Council’s director of corporate and community services Kristy Kay said it was too costly and logistically difficult to cover the new shire’s four main towns in one day.
“Community groups will be able to continue to hold their own Australia Day events but it is proposed that council only sponsor and support one event a year,” Ms Kay said.
It will be rotated through Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala in future years.
The 2017 event will be at the Urana swimming pool from 10am to 3pm with a wacky raft race and waterskiing to feature.
The council will spend $8000 on it and Ms Kay said a free bus service from Corowa to Urana may run on the day.
Nominations for Australia Day awards, including citizen of the year and local achiever prizes, will be sought from next month.
Meanwhile, the Bald Archy art show held in Corowa from September 10 to October 2 drew 1900 patrons, 700 more than last year.
Ms Kay said 75 per cent were from beyond Corowa.
