The proposal, which also includes the conversion of the first-floor Banksia function room into 66-seat boutique cinema, conference area with an outdoor balcony, was recently ticked off by council planning staff.
Rooftop bars already exist in Albury at the Bended Elbow pub and nearby Albion Hotel.
The Commercial Club rooftop bar will feature a tinted glass retractable roof.
The approved development application states the rooftop venue will provide an “iconic development and tourist attraction” for the city.
“The facility will be visible from Dean Street and the elevated location will provide club members and visitors with excellent views of the monument, the mountains and Dean Street,” the report states.
“The development will revitalise the eastern part of the Commercial Club Dean Street façade and add to the vitality of Dean Street by providing visible club activity at first-floor level and at roof level.
“Vertical louvres and patterned glass will provide some screening from sun and wind and add diversity to the appearance of façade.”
The club's present trading hours from 9am to 1am Sunday to Thursday and 9am to 2am Friday and Saturday will remain unchanged upon completion of the development.
But live entertainment or loud speakers on the rooftop bar will cease at midnight.
Commercial Club chief executive Bruce Duck said no start date had been confirmed and the project would be considered as part of a strategic plan review early next year.
Works are presently underway on the Elizabeth Street side of the club.
The Bended Elbow rooftop bar opened in 2010 and five years later was crowned the best in regional NSW.
The Albion Hotel's rooftop bar and restaurant opened in 2011.
Teilion Architects submitted the development application on behalf of the Commercial Club.
