The black and white Kelpie became lost in drainage near the corner of Wagga Road and La Fontaine Avenue about midday Wednesday.
A woman walking the dog had been unable to free the scared pet and called in firefighters.
The dog had been stuck for about 40 minutes when they arrived, having walked deep into a section of the drain that was inaccessible to people.
“With the way the drain curves and diverges, we couldn't get in to see where it was,” firefighter Matt Smith said.
“We could hear the dog, but we couldn't see it.
“We lifted all the manholes on the western side of the road and eventually the owner called for the dog and it appeared, and we managed to grab it.”
Perhaps surprisingly, Mr Smith said the most common animal rescue firefighters responded to was escaped pet birds stuck in trees.
