The council has not appointed a chief executive for fewer than five years in the past two decades, but mayor Anna Speedie said the decision was made around timing of the 2020 elections, not performance.
“What we felt was, within this council term, we would review that contract again and then set it up so the next council has time to settle,” she said.
The mayor would not reveal discussions held during the confidential section of Monday’s council meeting, nor Ms Harrington’s salary, believed to be around $200,000-plus per year.
“Personally I would congratulate her, she’s doing an excellent job,” Cr Speedie said. “She’s been brilliant for this city – her passion, her commitment is absolutely 100 per cent.”
The decision will take her appointment through to April 2020.
