Murray carded five birdies and just one bogey to sit in a tie for fourth at three-under par – five strokes behind leader James Grierson.
Birdies came at the second, fourth, 12th, 13th and 15th holes, with his only blemish at the 17th.
“Nothing really changed from the first day, I just hit the ball a bit closer,” Murray said.
“The greens were a bit softer, which allowed me to capitalise more.”
Playing “smart” is Murray’s key to victory.
“Royal Melbourne can change on a day-to-day basis, or even on different holes,” he said.
“It can be very penalising if you short-side yourself.
“If I’m around the mark with nine holes to play on Sunday, I’ll be a good chance,” Murray added.
