But as the Melbourne tourist approached the Ned Kelly Vault, Constable Kieth Warren and Sergeant Ian Sinclair cut her short with handcuffs at the ready.
The pair escorted her to where the famous bushranger himself lay in wait – but bearing a bag of Beechworth-themed goodies.
The good-humoured gesture marked the 50,000th visitor – Ms Gilmore – to the Ned Kelly Vault, an annex of the Burke Museum.
Museum director Patrick Watt said the attraction, which opened in 2014, was always met with interest from guests.
“The museum is not a monument to Ned, it is simply an amazing collection supported with museological rigour,” he said.
