Dieter Kreuzer, a detective sergeant, was stopped on Rau Street in East Albury about 1.10am on January 13.
It’s alleged the 52-year-old had a high-range alcohol reading near the intersection of Schubach Street.
He was taken back to the Albury police station and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.214.
He is on an extended period of leave from the police force after having his work status reviewed.
Kreuzer, whose matter was listed in Albury court on Tuesday, has applied to have the matter considered under the Mental Health Act.
He is facing charges of high range drink driving, with charge sheets noting it was his first such offence.
His licence was suspended following his arrest.
Kreuzer is yet to enter a plea.
The matter has been adjourned until next month.
