After ending their hoodoo in Griffith to start the season, Aggies ended another long losing sequence on the Border with a comfortable win.
Coming through a tight first half, Ag College went to another level in the second stanza to score a 37-13 win over Albury.
Not one player had tasted success at Albury prior to the clash, and coach Will Mitchell was thrilled to end another horror record on the road.
“I’m very happy,” Mitchell said.
“None of our first grade boys had ever won done there so it’s another tough road trip done.”
Albury were first to score, through a penalty goal, but a couple of quick tries gave Ag College momentum heading into the break.
Going in with a 15-3 lead, Ag College scored another three tries in the second half to come away with their second win of the season.
Mitchell thought they stuck to the task at hand well.
“We probably lapses for a little bit and let a few tries in, but all in all in was fairly convincing,” he said.
“We probably took out foot of the throat for 15 minutes but at the end of the day we held the ball for longer periods and used the ball pretty well.”
Hamish Pennington led the team around the field while Cameron Duffy was also strong as the stand-in skipper.
He scored two tries and was also good in defence.
Matt Harris was among the best of the forwards.
It will be another step up for Ag College with a clash with Waratahs, on the rebound for the first time in over a year, next week.
After being humbled by Leeton last week, Mitchell thought it is an important victory with a tough couple of weeks ahead.
“We really needed this win and it doesn’t get any easier next week with Waratahs, who are coming off their first loss,” he said.
“It’s onwards and upwards.”
It was also a big effort without captain Thomas Macleay and prop Gabe Brown.
However their replacements, Tom Wiltshire and Duncan Woods, put in impressive efforts in their absence.
It will give the Ag College coaching staff a few headaches before taking on Waratahs.
Macleay will come back into the team, but there will be plenty of competition for the remaining spots.
They will also have to do it without their coach who will be overseas when they face his former club.
Meanwhile, Albury will be searching for win three when they travel to face Wagga City.
Wagga City accounted for Griffith 41-34.
“We played 30 minutes of good football,” coach Michael Kanck said.
