The Border side was forced to overcome a 1-0 deficit early in the contest, but produced two goals of their own to come away with a hard-earned 2-1 result.
United coach James Coutts said his team’s ability to win without necessarily playing its preferred game style was pleasing.
“It wasn’t pretty by any stretch, but those games are sometimes the best feelings when you win them,” Coutts said.
“They’re very strong, very physical, they put balls into areas, they’ve got long throws, they do the ugly stuff and they do it well.
“Our ability to scrap it out, win second balls and do the ugly stuff, shows we’re a team that’s adaptable and can adapt to different styles, however teams play.”
Coutts netted his first goal of the season 10 minutes after a successful penalty from the home side, while centre back Ryan Giles produced the match winner in the 67th minute.
“It was long overdue because I’ve missed a couple of sitters to be honest,” Coutts said.
“He (Giles) has been our best finisher at training lately and showed all the forwards how to do it, so it’s no surprise when the ball dropped, he put it away.”
The ladder is: Dandenong City 26, Dandenong Thunder 26, Melbourne City 24, Murray United 19, Nunawading City 15, Goulburn Valley Suns 14, Springvale White Eagles 13, Box Hill United 12, Eastern Lions 12, Richmond 12.
