The 82-year-old Badaginnie man in his ute was just past the Warrenbayne Road exit at about 10.20am when the collision occurred.
The Major Collision Investigation Unit remained in Benalla on Wednesday night before travelling back to Melbourne on Thursday afternoon. Detective Sergeant Darren Williams said they were still working to determine exactly what happened.
“A lot of that’s still under investigation, all we know is the victim’s vehicle was a slower-moving vehicle on the highway,” he said.
“Unfortunately the truck has been unable to avoid him, has tried to take evasive action at the last minute.”
The ute was forced off the freeway and flipped onto its roof.
MCIU police interviewed the truck driver – a 36-year-old Brookfield man – on Wednesday night, but released him without charge.
Detective Sergeant Darren Williams said they would continue to obtain statements from witnesses before coming to a decision about possible charges.
Anyone who witnesses the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
