Trailing by 17 points early in the final term, the Cats hit back strongly with John Spencer nailing the sealer in the dying minutes.
Chris Oats was sensational for the victors, with support coming from fellow running players Sam Bowers, Sam Fiedler and Jared Farwell.
Ron Fuge was the best forward on the ground with five majors while Tyson Neander chipped in with three.
“The boys didn’t give up,” Rutherglen president Greg Lumby said.
“It was pretty tight all day.
“It was a good day with the firsts, reserves and under-17s winning.”
Coach Damien Wilson also stood up for Rutherglen under pressure.
The clash has set up a mouth-watering first semi-final with Rutherglen coming up against neighbours Wahgunyah next Sunday.
