Readers of Jackie French’s classic children’s book Diary of a Wombat will know Wednesdays go like this: Morning: Slept. Afternoon: Fought major battle with flat hairy creature. Won battle. Demanded a carrot. Evening: Demanded more carrots. No response. Chewed hole in door. Got carrots. Scratched. Went to sleep.
Instead Digger’s day out at Lavington on Wednesday morning went more like this: Morning: Began new hole in soft dirt under house. Dug second hole. Dug third hole to be closer to humans. Slept. Late morning: Met Albury City rangers. Afternoon: Now have new abode at Jindera Gap. Scratched. Slept.
A City of Albury spokesman said a Lavington family contacted rangers after noticing the uninvited guest had made himself at home.
The accidental tourist had been busily excavating beneath their house.
“The wombat was digging under the house and owners became concerned it might be damaging their house,” he said.
The spokesman said two rangers were able to capture the wayward wombat without too much protest.
“It took them about 15 minutes and the wombat was not particularly frightened,” he said.
WIRES staff released the wombat late morning in bushland at Jindera Gap.
Digger was last seen wandering off in search of a better home site near a creek bank.
It’s the second time this year a wombat has made a move on the suburbs after Wally the Wombat tried to check-in to Albury Airport.
