I will be voting yes because the ability to affirm the love between two people doesn’t just make sense, but is also a human right.
A July 2014 poll, commissioned by Australian Marriage Equality and conducted by Lynton Crosby and Mark Textor, found that 72 per cent of Australians support marriage equality. Considering the trajectory I would assume even more Australians are in support of it today.
With this in mind it is ludicrous for Australia’s parliament not to do its job and legislate this change, instead throwing it to the people for what could like be a divisive and hateful campaign. The next generations of Australians will not look kindly on this cheap political stunt by a weak government.
That two loving adults are not able to marry will be thrown in the same ‘what were they thinking’ basket of bigotry such as women not having the right to vote, Aboriginal Australia’s not being counted in the census, and bans on interracial marriage.
Every consenting Australian adult should be allowed to marry the person they love, regardless of their gender. It is time we joined with many of our contemporary western countries and allow everyone to express their love through marriage. I for one am looking forward to attending many same sex marriages over the coming years.
