The incident occurred on Dean Street, near David Street, about 4.25am on Saturday.
Two men in their mid-twenties fled after punching and kicking the victims, aged 26 and 22, in the face.
Detective Inspector Winston Woodward said both were taken to hospital for serious injuries.
“At this stage it appears to be an unprovoked attack,” he said.
“We are reviewing CCTV in the area and the detectives are investigating the matter.”
The men were watching a street performer between The Bended Elbow and David Street when they were assaulted.
Police seek witnesses.
Detective Inspector Woodward said such assaults could be deadly.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe all of the time in Albury-Wodonga,” he said.
“It is a bit concerning that at that time in the morning, two males who were minding their own business, were assaulted in this manner.
“Assaults of this nature can go very badly where a person punched or kicked to the head (falls) down (and) hits his head on the concrete footpath.”
One offender is about six-foot-five, Caucasian, of medium build, in his mid-20s, wearing a black T-shirt and jeans.
The second offender is of average height, of medium build, Caucasian, in his mid-20s, with a white T-shirt and jeans.
